On Friday June 5th, Governor Jack Markell delivered on his campaign promises to small businesses. At the Chase Center on the Riverfront, Wilmington, during the 2009 Governors’ Entrepreneurial Business Conference, Governor Markell and The Director of the Delaware Economic Development Office Secretary Alan Levin shared their vision for business in the State of Delaware with new and developing initiatives being designed specifically for the Delaware business community. The goal of the conference was to usher in the resources Delaware’s small businesses need to succeed. It is indeed a “new way for a new day”. This conference served as a “small business success road map” to all who attended; a roadmap that will clearly identify small business resources, support entities and their core competencies, all who have a renewed pledge to offer “bulls eye” support and assistance to Delaware’s small businesses both now and in the future.

Also a highlight of this conference was the Delaware Emerging Technology Center 2009, Entrepreneurial Boot Camp and Business Plan Competition Awards. This program was designed to promote entrepreneurship and encourage the development of business ventures from students and/or early stage entrepreneurs and innovators throughout the State of Delaware. Entries were evaluated based upon the following criteria:

• Business potential for the concepts, including feasibility of the product, attractiveness of the industry/niche, identified target market with demonstrated demand, and accuracy of financial data with favorable returns.

• Evidence of sound strategic thinking, including resources and personnel to execute start-up/ expansion, competent management to sustain success, and relevant market research.

• Quality of written and oral presentations, including organization and coherence, enthusiasm for product, poise and professionalism.
